Reimagine and Repurpose: Beck’s Design Team Thinks Outside the Container

  • Jun 3, 2015

The facts are staggering: While there are approximately 17 million steel shipping containers, each with a lifespan of 20 years, most sit unused in ports because of the prohibitive cost in shipping them back to their point of origin.

Beck’s design team decided that a better use was to rethink the container’s use.

What if a shipping container could be repurposed into something new? Something better? Something that solves a problem?

Our Container Hotel repurposes 150 otherwise abandoned shipping containers, transforming them into a hotel that serves boom areas desperately in need of quick-assemble lodging.

The concept was entered into the AIA Unbuilt Design Awards competition. Read more about the project, as well as other entries, here.
