Heading into the New Year, we typically see an influx of resumes and phone calls from candidates looking for career opportunities at The Beck Group.
We’re a respected leader in the communities we serve, and we’ve earned recognition as a “Best Place to Work,” by the Dallas and Tampa Business Journals. As a result, we’re fortunate and humbled by interest from candidates who want to be a part of our architecture and construction teams.
If you’re an interested candidate, read on, because we’re sharing tips on what our hiring managers look for when evaluating potential talent.
Values are important
Our values are not just words. They are meaningful promises that drive what we do as an organization.
When we speak with or meet a candidate, we ask questions and look for authentic answers that tell us whether or not you align with our values of: Caring, Integrity, Innovation and Integration.
If you want to be a top contender, we recommend researching Beck. Understand who we are and what we do in the communities we serve. Above all, be honest about what you bring to the table and why you want to be a part of our team and culture.
Experience is critical
While we hold our values in the highest regard, we also value skill set. At Beck, 90 percent of our work is repeat business, which means our clients value our knowledge, work and the values we put into action.
We look for architecture candidates with strong commercial portfolios and experience, and construction candidates who have a track record of performing at a high-level on notable commercial projects.
It’s also smart to think critically about what sets you apart from the pool of candidates we see every day – for example, do you collaborate well with others, or are you first to bring solutions to the table when challenges arise? It’s thought leadership like this that helps us differentiate candidates.
Just getting started?
For those of you in school or about to graduate, we have a robust internship program, and we recruit from top architecture and construction schools.
When we’re recruiting talent on campus, we’ve found that candidates who can effectively show or communicate experience are likely to receive offers to join our team. Specifically, an awesome intern candidate for Beck should:
- Go above and beyond the call of duty
- Show enthusiasm and dedication
- Take an innovative and creative approach to their role
- Contribute to a positive team morale
- Take ownership of their projects
- Be a great cultural fit for Beck
During the interview process on campus, we ask candidates questions about experience, their leadership and skill sets, whether it be from an old internship, a part-time job, a group project in school or as a leader in an organization or on a sports team.
We find that past behavior is a good indicator of future behavior – how a candidate has worked and contributed within previous teams shows how he or she will perform at Beck.
The benefits of finding a rock star intern who adds value to the team and is a great fit during the short time they’re here, makes a difference and can even result in a longer-term opportunity for the candidate and Beck.
