Identifying the Dallas-Fort Worth as a good location to foster growth, IBM developed the massive Solana campus to house 20,000 employees. Occupying 900 acres, the 2.5 million SF mixed- use complex includes 14 low-rise office buildings, a computer center, cafeteria/central plant, three retail buildings and four parking garages. The phased occupancy schedule called for the first-turn over in 13 months. To meet this tight schedule, Beck’s construction team used a “shotgun” start, where nearly all buildings began construction concurrently. Beck’s fast track method was successful in delivering the buildings ahead of schedule while maintaining excellent quality.
The campus was left sparsely occupied after a 1990 downsizing. In 2005, Beck’s construction team returned to repurpose the campus as the new corporate location of First American Real Estate Information Services. Beck completed 650,000 SF of extensive renovations and added a connector building that joined four main buildings to increase efficiency of pedestrian travel from building to building.
