Offering families a place to sleep, eat and relax while their children receive medical treatment at one of Central Texas’ nearby hospitals. Austin’s Ronald McDonald House serves as a home-away-from-home for families living outside of Austin. Built by Beck, the 30-room facility provides a healthy and healing environment for children and families. Each room is a clean room, enabling children with compromised immune systems the ability to stay at the House. The house was built using materials that are rapidly renewable and manufactured without the use of toxic substances. Maximizing energy efficiency, the house was designed to mitigate the heat island effect through the use of reflective roofing materials and a green roof, and uses reclaimed water to enhance the environmental quality of its surroundings. The project’s sustainability efforts were recognized with a LEED Platinum certification.
