New Heights Elementary School was the Tampa Bay area’s first LEED certified school. Built by Beck, the LEED Gold certified school campus includes six buildings: three two-story classroom buildings, a one-story administrative building, a one-story media center/library building and a one-story cafeteria/music building. Exceeding standard air quality within the building was a top priority. Special air filtration and air monitoring measures were taken during and after construction. To keep mold from forming, all finishes were installed after the air-conditioning system was up and running. This prevented moisture from being absorbed into walls, ceilings and floors. The beautiful masonry campus features courtyards, butterfly gardens and outdoor teaching classrooms with drought-tolerant Florida native plants, serving as a living teaching tool.
